Learning Objectives:
By the end of the lesson learners should be able to:Defined static electricity.
Describe charge distribution on a charged conductor.
Is an electrical charge that accumulates on an object when it is rubbed against another object.
It can also be defined as an electric discharge resulting from the accumulation of electric charge on an insulated body.
Examination of the distribution of charge over the surface of a conductor shows that the charges generally concentrate at places where the surface is sharply curved. Thus the surface charge density or charge per unit area is very high at sharp points with very small areas. It is also found that the charges reside only on the surface of a conductor and not inside.
Rationale:
Charge distribution is an important aspect in the understanding concentration of charges in different shapes and this helps us get to know the working principle of thunder arrestors.
