Lesson Note and Plan on Mathematics
Whole number 0 (Zero)
Subject: Mathematics
Theme: Number & Numeration
Topic: Whole number 0 (Zero)
Date: dd/mm/yyyy
Class: Basic 1
Duration: 35 Minutes
No of Learners: 30
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the lesson learners should be able to:1) recognize that the symbol 0 stands for nothingness;
2) read the number 0;
3) Write 0.
4) Write 0-5.
Rationale:
Learning the zero concept is important in mathematics as zero is used as a placeholder in place values. For example, there is a huge difference between the numbers 480 and 408, as zero is in different places for both numbers. Therefore, learning the concept of zero is important for children to understand.Prerequisite/Previous knowledge:
Learners can count 1-5.Learning Materials:
1. flash cards2. learners mathematics text books
3. pictures of objects, etc.
Reference Materials:

Lesson Development:
STAGE | TEACHER'S ACTIVITY | LEARNER'S ACTIVITY | LEARNING POINTS |
---|---|---|---|
INTRODUCTION full class session (3 mins) |
The teacher says the following and has the learners follow her lead: "Stand up (Teacher stands and so does everyone else) 1. "Hands up/hands down" (do 1 times) 2. "Jump" (do 2 times) 3. "Run!/Stop!" 4. "Turn around!/Stop!" (do 3 times) 5. "Hands up/hands down" (do 4 times) 6. "Jump" (do 5 times) 7. finally "Sit down". The teacher asks learners to count 0-5 in the air and sand |
Learners follow the teacher's leads | Warming up and revising previous lesson on whole number 0-5 |
The teacher begins the day's lesson by checking learners' textbook/notebook, thereafter calls the learners out and introducing the topic by singing a rhyme to help learners understand zero (0) and guiding the learners to sing the rhyme with her with demonstration. Thus; 1) Around you go, around you go ... that's the way you make a zero! (x5) 2) Make a big circle, like your mother cooking pot! (x5) |
Learners join the teacher in the song and action, learners sing along and dance! | Developing the idea of the concept of the topic, Whole numbers 0. | |
DEVELOPMENT Step 1. Group Work (3 mins) |
The teacher guides the learners to form four groups and asks them to choose their leaders and secretaries. | Learners choose their group leaders and secretaries. | Inculcating leadership skills, competitive spirit, cooperation, teamwork and a sense of responsibility among learners. |

DEVELOPMENT Step 2. (3 mins) |
The teacher placed five tea mugs on a table and asked the learners to identify them. The teacher asks the learners: 1. If one tea mug accidentally falls, how many tea mugs are left upon the table. 2. If another tea mug accidentally falls down, how many tea mugs are left upon the table. 3. If another tea mug accidentally falls down, how many tea mugs are left upon the table. 4. If another tea mug accidentally falls down, how many tea mugs are left upon the table. 5. If another tea mug accidentally falls down, how many tea mugs are left upon the table. 6. If another tea mug accidentally falls down, how many tea mugs are left upon the table. THE TEACHER TELLS LEARNERS THAT NOTHING MEANS ZERO (0) |
1. The learners identify the objects as tea mugs. 2. There are four tea mugs left upon the table. 3. There are three tea mugs left upon the table. 4. There are two tea mugs left upon the table. 5. There is one tea mugs left upon the table. 6. Nothing is left upon the table. |
Being able to identify the objects as tea mugs Developing the idea of the concept of whole number zero (0) |
ACTIVITY 1 STEP 3 3 mins. |
The teacher guides learners to read and recognize the symbol 0 1. How many balls are in each box? 2. Which baskets are empty? |
Learners read and recognize the symbol 0 1. (a) 2 balls; (b) 0 ball; (c) 4 balls; (d) 3 balls; (e) 5 balls and (f) 0 ball 2. Basket (b); (d) and (f) are empty |
Read and recognize the symbol 0 |

ACTIVITY 3 STEP 3 3 mins. |
The teacher guides learners to trace and write 0 (zero) on there note/textbooks. | Learners trace and write zero on there note/textbook |
Writing and pronouncing the number 0; |
The teacher guides pupils to write and pronounce 0-5 on there note and textbooks | Learners write and pronounce 0-5 on there note/textbook |

Evaluation Full class session (5 mins) |
Ask the following questions to evaluate the achievement of the set objectives. 1) How many objects are in each box? 2) How many eggs are shown in each box? |
Learners expected response: 1) (a) 4 pens; (b) 2 tea mugs; (c) 1 car; (d) 0; (e) 5 birds; (f) 3 apples 2) |
Confirming the achievement of the set objectives. |
Conclusion, full class session (3 mins) | The teacher asks learners to trace and write 0-5 on there note/textbooks | The learners trace and write 0-5 on there note/textbook. |
Communication: This is developed through answering questions verbally and interpreting the silent signs of teammates during the activities. |
